Karva Chauth is one of the few days where the henna itself is part of the ritual. Here's how to get it right without a stressful rush.

Timing

Apply the evening before (or early the previous day). Henna needs 24–48 hours after removal to reach full colour, so a day's lead time means your stain is deepest during the day-long fast, the evening puja and moonrise. Applying the same morning leaves you with a pale orange design for the photos.

Getting a deep red stain

The "darker means…" saying is charming, but colour is really chemistry:

1. Use fresh, body-art-quality cones — old powder can't stain dark no matter what you do.
2. Add a few drops of cajeput or eucalyptus oil to the paste.
3. Keep the paste on for 6+ hours, overnight if you can.
4. Keep your hands warm throughout.
5. Scrape off dry, keep away from water for 12 hours, and seal with oil or balm.

You don't need bridal hands to look the part:
