Bright festive mehndi on a woman's hands before a Navratri garba night

Navratri is nine nights of garba and dandiya, and mehndi is part of the outfit every single one of them. The trick is choosing a design that looks festive but doesn't tie up an evening you'd rather spend dancing.

Navratri mehndi is festive henna applied for the nine-night festival — usually quick, bold Arabic or traditional designs on the hands and often the feet, timed so the colour is deep for garba. Because you'll be moving, keep it striking but fast.

Festive colour starts with a fresh cone, so order ahead during the season.

Designs that work for garba nights

  • Diagonal Arabic vine — one bold bail from wrist to index finger, rest of the hand bare. Fast, graphic, photographs beautifully under lights.
  • Palm tikki + fingers — a round tikki in the palm with decorated fingertips; classic and quick.
  • Ankle band — a slim decorated band to match your chaniya choli and payal; see feet & ankle mehndi.
  • Both-hands khafif — light khafif sprays on both hands, done in under half an hour total.
  • Mid-week refresh — a single finger vine or a small wrist motif around day 4–5 to freshen a fading design.

Pair these with the broader ideas in our festival mehndi guide and mehndi design ideas by occasion.

Timing across the nine nights

  • 1–2 days before Navratri: apply your main design so the stain peaks on night one. Henna keeps darkening for 24–48 hours after removal.
  • Nights 1–3: colour is at its deepest — this is when to wear your boldest outfit.
  • Nights 4–6: the design lightens but stays clearly readable with good aftercare.
  • Day 5–6: optional quick top-up design if you want fresh colour for the last nights and Dussehra.
  • Night 9 / Dussehra: the original design will be a soft brown — still lovely, or refreshed if you topped up.

How to make Navratri mehndi last

  1. Use fresh, finely sifted paste — old cones give a pale stain that fades fast. See how to choose henna cones.
  2. Leave the paste on 3–5 hours, longer if you can.
  3. Scrape it off dry — never wash it off.
  4. No water on the design for 12 hours, then seal with oil or balm each night before bed.
  5. Go easy on sanitiser and dishwashing — festival cooking is hard on henna.

The full method — powder to aftercare — is in how to get a dark henna stain. If your colour still comes out weak, why is my henna stain light has the checklist.

Motifs that suit garba and dandiya

Navratri henna leans festive and folk rather than bridal. Motifs that fit the mood:

  • Dandiya sticks crossed as a small motif on the wrist or between two fingers.
  • Garba dancers / silhouettes in a border, a nod to the raas circle.
  • Peacock — the classic festive motif; a quick version sits well on the back of the hand (peacock mehndi guide).
  • Diya, kalash and marigold vines carried over from Diwali designs, since the seasons run close together.
  • Chunky Rajasthani-style borders if you have time on a rest day — see Rajasthani mehndi.

Keep the everyday-night designs light and save one elaborate design for Ashtami or Dussehra.

Matching mehndi to your nine outfits

Many people follow the nine-colour Navratri tradition, changing chaniya choli colour each night. Mehndi doesn't change colour, but you can plan it around the outfits: apply a bold design before night one when you'll wear brighter shades, then a lighter khafif refresh mid-week for the softer pastel nights. A deep maroon stain reads well against almost every Navratri colour, which is one more reason to follow the dark-stain routine.

Doing your own vs booking

Navratri designs are deliberately simple, so most people do their own or swap with a friend — one does the other's dominant hand. If you host a garba evening, a stencil set lets guests do quick matching designs. For a big family function, book an artist for the first night and DIY the rest — ask early, festival weeks fill up (booking a mehndi artist in Bangalore).

Questions people ask

Q

When should I apply mehndi for Navratri?

A

For colour on the first night, apply 1–2 days before Navratri starts so the stain peaks as the festival begins. If you want it fresh mid-festival, reapply a light design around day 4–5 — henna lasts about a week to ten days on hands.

Q

What mehndi design is best for garba nights?

A

Something quick and bold: an Arabic vine across the back of the hand, a palm tikki with decorated fingers, or an ankle band to match your chaniya choli. You'll be dancing, so avoid anything so intricate it takes hours to sit for.

Q

Will mehndi fade before Navratri ends?

A

It'll lighten over the nine days but won't disappear. Good aftercare — dry removal, no water for 12 hours, oil to seal — keeps it readable through the festival. A quick top-up design mid-week refreshes it.

Q

Can I get henna cones delivered before Navratri in Bangalore?

A

Yes — A1 Henna delivers chemical-free cones across BTM Layout, Jayanagar, Koramangala, HSR Layout and all of Bengaluru, usually next day, with pan-India shipping. Order a few days ahead during festival season.
