A mehndi function is the most relaxed event of an Indian wedding — no dress code stress, no long ceremony, just henna, music and the two families warming up together. Here's how to host one well.
A mehndi ceremony (mehndi ki raat) is a pre-wedding celebration where henna is applied to the bride and family, with music, food and games. It's usually held one to three days before the wedding.

The rituals
- The bride first. Her design starts early — often the previous day — because a full bridal set takes hours (bridal mehndi timeline).
- The groom's motif. A small design, or the bride's initials, applied at the same function (mehndi designs for men).
- Hidden name. The groom's initials are tucked into the bride's pattern for him to find — see the significance of mehndi in Indian weddings.
- A dab for luck. In some families, the mother-in-law or an elder applies the first small dot of henna to the bride's palm.
The games
Keep every game short — the henna is the clock:
- Find the name — the groom hunts for his hidden initials; a forfeit if he can't.
- Couple quiz — the sisters ask "who said I love you first?" and compare answers.
- Folk songs / antakshari — traditional mehndi songs, then a sing-off between the two families.
- Ring in the milk / shoe hunt — carried over from other functions but often played here.
- Roast round — friends share (kind) stories about the couple.
A rough run of the evening
- Bride's application already underway (started earlier or the day before).
- Guests arrive, food and music start.
- Songs and games in rounds — 10–15 minutes each, not longer.
- Family and guest henna at the station, in parallel.
- The hidden-name reveal or a couple game as a centrepiece moment.
- Photos with the fresh designs; everyone leaves with aftercare advice.
The henna station
For the family and guests, set up a dedicated table so the artists can focus on the bride:

Running the henna in the right order
- Bride — start early, block 4–7 hours, keep her fed and warm.
- Mothers and sisters — same session, so their colour is dark for the main events.
- Wider family and friends — a second chair or the stencil station.
- Everyone leaves with one line of aftercare: paste on for hours, scrape dry, no water for 12 hours, seal with oil — the dark stain guide.
Playlist and food
- Music: a mix of traditional mehndi and folk songs plus current favourites for the dancing.
- Food: finger food and things that can be eaten one-handed (the bride and anyone mid-design can't use their hands) — plus a straw for every drink.
- Seating: low, cushioned seating for the bride with an armrest or a small table for her hands; regular chairs for guests.
- Light: bright, even light where the artists work — phone torches don't cut it for fine detail.
