Sugar waxing (sugaring) is one of the oldest hair-removal methods there is: a paste of sugar, water and lemon, warmed until pliable, pressed onto the skin and flicked off. Organic wax powder gives you a consistent mix without cooking sugar from scratch.
Why sugar paste over strip wax
- Water-washable — no oily residue, cleans up with warm water.
- Gentler — it grips hair more than skin, and it's removed with the direction of growth, so less pulling and less irritation.
- Reusable — one ball of paste works across a whole area.
- Fewer ingredients — sugar, water, lemon. No resins or synthetic additives.
- Lower temperature — warm, not hot, so less risk of a burn.
Making the paste
- Mix the wax powder with water (and a little lemon juice if the instructions call for it) to a smooth slurry.
- Heat gently — a microwave in short bursts, or a double boiler — stirring, until it's a honey-to-caramel consistency and an even amber colour.
- Let it cool to comfortably warm. Test on your inner wrist — it should be pliable, not runny, and never hot.
- If it's too runny, heat a little more; too stiff, add a few drops of warm water.
Technique
- Prep the skin — clean, completely dry, no lotion or oil. Dust lightly with cornflour/talc so the paste sticks to hair, not skin.
- Hair length: about 2–5 mm (roughly two weeks' regrowth). Trim longer hair first.
- Apply against the direction of hair growth — press a thin layer on with your fingers or a spatula.
- Flick off in the direction of growth, keeping your hand low and close to the skin (not up in the air). Hold the skin taut with the other hand.
- Re-use the same ball — it stays workable for a good while. Swap for fresh paste when it gets sticky or picks up too much hair.
- Press a hand on the area straight after each pull to calm it.
Aftercare
- Rinse any residue with warm water.
- Cool compress or aloe for a few minutes if the skin is pink.
- Skip hot showers, sauna, swimming, heavy exercise, perfumed products and sun on the area for 24 hours.
- Exfoliate gently from day 2–3 and moisturise to prevent ingrown hairs.
- Patch test first if you've not sugared before, and don't sugar over broken, sunburnt or irritated skin, active acne, moles or varicose veins.
Troubleshooting the paste
- Too runny / won't ball up → under-cooked, or too much water. Heat a little more.
- Too hard / snaps → over-cooked. Add a few drops of warm water and warm gently.
- Sticky and won't release from skin → paste too warm, or skin wasn't dry and dusted. Cool it slightly; re-prep the skin.
- Not gripping the hair → hair too short (needs ~2–5 mm), or lotion/oil on the skin.
- Breaking off in bits on removal → your flick is going up instead of low and parallel to the skin. Keep the hand close.
Which areas
- Easiest to learn on: lower legs and arms — flat, visible, forgiving.
- Doable with practice: underarms (hair grows in several directions, work in sections), bikini line (patch test, go slow).
- Face (upper lip, brows): use a small amount, hold the skin very taut, and be cautious — this skin is delicate.
- Avoid: broken, sunburnt or irritated skin, active acne, moles, skin tags, varicose veins, and any area treated with a retinoid recently.
Storing wax powder and made-up paste
- Keep the powder sealed, cool and dry — it lasts a long time.
- Made-up paste keeps for weeks in a sealed tub at room temperature; just re-warm to soften before use.
- Don't return hair-laden paste to the tub — work with a portion and discard it when it's spent.
How often
Every 3–4 weeks, once regrowth reaches a few millimetres. Over time hair often grows back finer and sparser.

Questions people ask
What is organic wax powder?
A natural powder — typically sugar-based — that you mix with water (and sometimes a little lemon) and heat into a pliable paste for hair removal. It rinses off with water, is gentler on skin than resin strip wax, and the paste can be re-used across an area.
Does sugar waxing hurt less than normal wax?
For most people, yes. Sugar paste grips the hair more than the skin and is removed in the direction of hair growth, so it pulls less at the skin. It's also less likely to cause the redness and irritation that hot resin wax can.
How long does hair need to be for sugar waxing?
About 2–5 mm — roughly two weeks of regrowth. Too short and the paste can't grip; too long and it's more uncomfortable. Trim very long hair down first.
