Hands get all the attention, but leg mehndi is half of a bridal look and a lovely festival option on its own. Here's how to plan it so it comes out even, dark and comfortable to sit for.
Leg mehndi is henna applied to the top of the foot, the ankle and — for bridal work — up the front of the shin and calf, usually mirrored on both legs. It ranges from a simple ankle band you can do in twenty minutes to full traditional coverage that's a project in itself.
Even the simplest version needs a cone that stains deep on the foot, so start there.
Leg mehndi layouts, lightest to heaviest
- Ankle band + toe accents — a slim decorated band around the ankle like a payal (anklet), plus a motif on each toe. Fast, elegant, great for a festival.
- Foot spray — a tikki or half-mandala on the top of the foot with a vine reaching the toes, ankle left plain.
- Foot + ankle full — the top of the foot fully worked, an ankle cuff, motifs down each toe. The most common non-bridal "done up" option.
- Mid-shin bridal — coverage from toes to mid-shin, mirrored, with a clear "sock line". Built from woven bail vines, jaali fills and figure motifs, like Rajasthani hand work.
- Below-the-knee bridal — full traditional coverage; plan a long sitting and comfortable seating.

Planning the sitting
- Do legs before hands so your hands are free while the leg paste dries, or do one leg, then hands, then the other leg.
- Wear loose shorts or a skirt you don't mind losing to henna, and bring a change for going home.
- Sit somewhere you can keep your leg still and slightly raised for 30–40 minutes after each section.
- Budget the time honestly — see the countdown in bridal mehndi timeline & aftercare.
How to keep leg mehndi even
- Start at the toes and work up, so you're never resting a limb on wet paste.
- Establish the centre line of the shin first, then build symmetric motifs outward.
- Mirror as you go — do the same element on both legs before moving on, rather than finishing one leg entirely.
- Keep the back of the calf plain — it smudges against clothing and chairs.
- Leave the paste on as long as possible — overnight for bridal, wrapped loosely so it doesn't rub off.
Aftercare so the colour lasts
Legs move, rub on clothes and see more washing than hands, so aftercare matters more:
- Scrape the paste off dry, never wash it off.
- Seal with aftercare oil or balm and keep the area warm.
- Avoid water on the design for 12 hours, and skip tight jeans, socks and gym sessions for a day or two — see henna and swimming, sun & exercise.
- Expect the foot to go deepest; the shin will be a touch lighter. Full method: how to get a dark henna stain.

Your own leg vs an artist
An ankle band and foot spray are self-doable — your legs are easier to reach than your own dominant hand. Full mirrored bridal leg coverage is genuinely hard to do symmetrically on yourself; that's a job for an artist, ideally the same one doing your hands so the styles match. Ask about it when you book.
Legs are a bigger canvas — treat the colour with the same care you'd give your hands.

Questions people ask
How far up the leg does bridal mehndi go?
It varies by region and preference. Common stopping points are the ankle, mid-shin, or just below the knee. A full traditional bridal leg design covers the top of the foot and the front of the calf; the back of the calf is usually left plain since it rubs on clothing.
How long does leg mehndi take to apply?
A simple ankle band and foot spray is 20–40 minutes per foot. Full bridal leg coverage to mid-calf can be 1.5–3 hours per leg depending on density, so it's usually done alongside hands over one long sitting.
Does leg mehndi stain as dark as hands?
The top of the foot stains almost as dark as the palm. The shin and calf have thinner skin and more movement, so they usually come out a shade lighter and fade a little faster.
Can I get bridal henna cones delivered across Bangalore for leg mehndi?
Yes — A1 Henna delivers chemical-free, bridal-grade cones across Jayanagar, JP Nagar, Koramangala, HSR Layout, Indiranagar and all of Bengaluru, with pan-India shipping.
