Covering grey is the single most common reason people switch to henna, and it works — but the result depends entirely on which method you use. Here's what to expect and how to get even, lasting coverage.
Natural henna covers grey hair by coating each strand with lawsone dye, which binds permanently to the hair's keratin. Henna alone turns grey hair coppery-red; henna followed by indigo turns it brown to near-black. The grey is fully covered in both cases — you're choosing the final colour, not whether it works.
Coverage starts with real, additive-free plant powder.
What colour will my grey go?
| Method | Result on grey | Result on the rest of your hair | |---|---|---| | Henna only | Bright to deep copper-red | Adds a red-auburn tone over your base | | Henna, then indigo | Medium to dark brown | Darkens; cooler tone | | Henna + indigo mixed in one step | Chestnut / warm brown | Warm brown, slightly less predictable | | Indigo only (after a henna base) | Blue-black over the henna | Very dark |
Two things to know: henna is translucent, so on a full head of grey you get the truest, brightest result, and the colour develops over 2–3 days as it oxidises — it looks vivid orange on day one and settles by day three. More background is in henna for hair: benefits & how to.
The two-step method for brown/black grey coverage
Step 1 — Henna
- Mix body-art-quality henna with warm water (or weak tea) to a yoghurt consistency. Rest it 30 minutes to a few hours until it releases dye.
- Section clean, dry hair and apply root to tip with a brush and gloves, packing it on thickly at the greys.
- Wrap the head in cling film and a warm towel. Grey hair is resistant — leave it 2–3 hours.
- Rinse with water only (no shampoo) until it runs clear. Your hair will look coppery — that's expected.
Step 2 — Indigo (same day or next day)
- Mix indigo powder with warm water fresh — it has a short active window, so use it within 15–20 minutes.
- Apply over the henna-treated hair, wrap, and leave 45–90 minutes.
- Rinse with water, and don't shampoo for 24–48 hours so the colour can set.
Do a strand test first — take a few greys from your brush, run the full process, and check the colour before committing. This also serves as your safety patch test.
Timing and maintenance
- First full application: roots and lengths, so everything matches.
- Root touch-ups: every 3–4 weeks on the regrowth only. Overlap slightly onto old henna; it won't build up unevenly the way box dye does.
- Refresh the lengths 2–4 times a year if the ends look faded.
- Henna is permanent — it grows out, it doesn't wash out — so you never get a harsh line, just softening at the demarcation. See henna vs chemical hair dye.
Why henna suits grey hair
Grey hair is often coarse, wiry and dry. Henna binds to the cuticle and thickens and smooths each strand, so beyond colour it gives grey hair more body and shine — it doesn't lift or damage the way peroxide dye does (details in does henna damage hair). The same body-art-quality powder also works for beard coverage.
One rule: only ever use pure henna and pure indigo. Anything sold as "black henna", "instant henna hair dye" or promising black in an hour contains PPD or metallic salts and is dangerous on skin and unpredictable on hair — see natural henna vs black henna.

Questions people ask
Does henna fully cover grey hair?
Pure henna coats grey hair with a strong copper-red that is opaque but not "natural brown" on its own. For brown or black coverage you apply henna first, then indigo (a two-step process). The grey is fully covered either way — the question is the final shade.
How long do I leave henna on for grey coverage?
For stubborn or coarse grey, 2–3 hours. Greys have a smoother cuticle and take longer to accept the dye than pigmented hair. Keep the head warm and wrapped throughout.
How often do I need to reapply henna to grey roots?
Every 3–4 weeks on the regrowth, the same as chemical dye. Henna doesn't wash out, so you only ever re-do the new growth plus a light refresh on the lengths a few times a year.
Can I get natural hair henna delivered in Bangalore?
Yes — A1 Henna ships body-art-quality hair henna across Jayanagar, JP Nagar, BTM Layout, Koramangala and all of Bengaluru, with pan-India shipping.
