Wholesale Henna: A Bulk Buying Guide for Artists

Buying henna in volume — for a busy booking calendar, a salon, a stall, or resale — is where per-unit cost drops sharply. It's also where money gets wasted if stock ages before you use it. Here's how to do it well.

First: match order size to throughput

Henna cones don't spoil, but their staining power fades with time and heat. Work out how many cones you genuinely use or sell per month (see the per-occasion quantities in how to choose henna cones), and order 1–2 months' worth at a time, not a year's. Freeze what you won't use in the next few weeks.

Judging quality at scale

1. Order a small sample batch first. Stain-test it on your inner arm over 48 hours before committing to a large order.
2. On the full delivery, spot-check: batch date present, powder a deep green (not brown), earthy smell, paste smooth with no grit.
3. Do one more test stain from the batch before any important booking.
4. Reject or flag any batch that stains faint after 48 hours — that's degraded dye, and no aftercare fixes it.

Storage for a bulk order

• Freezer for the bulk of it — sealed bags, dated, tips up.
• Fridge for the current week or two.
• Rotate: always open the oldest bag first.
• Bring a cone to room temperature (15–20 min) before piping.

Per-unit pricing and terms

Ask a supplier:

• Price breaks by quantity, and the minimum order for artist/wholesale rates.
• Lead time — cones should ideally be rolled to order, not pulled from old stock.
• Batch dating on every cone.
• Tip size options — finer for bridal detail, wider for fills and stalls.
• Delivery — packed cool, and how fast within your city.
• Private label / custom packaging — minimums and lead time, and confirm the ingredient list and batch date stay on the label.
• Returns if a batch underperforms a stain test.

For resellers specifically

• Sell on freshness — a printed batch date and a "use within / freeze by" note builds trust.
• Pass on storage advice to your customers so a weak stain doesn't come back as a complaint.
• Only stock natural, chemical-free cones with a full ingredient list. Never carry anything labelled "black henna" — it's a liability and a reputation risk (why).

Working out your order size

A rough method:

1. Count cones used per average booking — 1–2 for festival hands, 3–5 for bridal.
2. Multiply by bookings per month (be honest, not hopeful).
3. Add ~20% for practice, warm-ups and spoilage.
4. Order one month's worth for room-temperature use, plus a freezer buffer you'll rotate through.

Cost vs waste — the real trade-off

Bulk rates only save money if the stock performs. A cheap large order that's already weeks old, or that degrades in a hot storeroom before you use it, costs more than a smaller order of fresh cones. Prioritise, in order: freshness and batch dating, consistent stain quality (proven by your sample test), then price per unit.
